A Green, Connected Community for International Students

Nottingham International Student Village is a mixed-use development that places student living at its heart while creating a genuinely integrated piece of city. Rather than treating accommodation as an isolated typology, the scheme weaves residential and student accommodation together with retail, leisure and communal space, so that students live as part of Nottingham's wider urban fabric rather than apart from it.

A communal heart at the centre of the site

At the core of the masterplan sits a distinctive circular commercial building, its curved timber-slatted façade wrapping a landscaped plaza with fountains, seating and mature planting. This circular form acts as the social and commercial anchor of the scheme, physically and visually connecting the surrounding residential blocks, the taller landmark tower, and the wider pedestrian network. Cafés, restaurants and shops line the ground floor of the ring and the adjoining retail street — the latter organised along a linear water feature that draws people through the development from one end to the other, giving the scheme a memorable, walkable spine and a strong sense of arrival.

A landmark green tower

A tiered residential/mixed-use tower forms the scheme's visual landmark, its faceted, cantilevered floors wrapped in continuous green terraces and integrated photovoltaic panels. Cascading planting softens the building's silhouette against the skyline while the terraces provide private and communal outdoor space for residents at every level — a clear expression of the project's sustainability ambitions carried through from masterplan down to individual unit.

Sustainable living, at every scale

Green roofs, vertical planting, solar generation and generous soft landscaping are applied consistently across the residential blocks, the commercial ring and the taller buildings framing the site, reducing the development's environmental footprint while giving residents daily contact with nature. Perimeter housing to the north and east responds sensitively in scale to the neighbouring residential context, while the more active, taller elements front the main road and waterway to the south and west, giving the scheme a strong civic presence at the edge of the site.

Bringing students into the life of the city

By combining student accommodation with market residential, retail, leisure and shared public realm, the scheme is deliberately designed to avoid the enclosed, self-contained "student bubble" that many purpose-built accommodation schemes fall into. Students, residents and the wider public share the same streets, squares and amenities, supporting a lively, mixed community and helping international students feel genuinely part of Nottingham from day one.
